CFD code comparison, verification and validation for decay tests of a FOWT semi-submersible floater

Abstract With the advancement of high-performance computation capabilities in recent years, high-fidelity modelling tools such as computational fluid dynamics are becoming increasingly popular offshore renewable sector. To justify credibility numerical simulations, thorough verification and validation is essential. In this work, preparatory heave decay tests for a freely floating single cylinder modelled. Subsequently, surge sway decays linearly moored wind turbine model OC4 (Offshore Code Comparison Collaboration Continuation) phase II semi-submersible platform simulated. Two different viscous-flow CFD codes used: OpenFOAM (open-source), ReFRESCO (community-based open-usage). Their results compared against each other with water tank experiments. For single-cylinder it found that natural period accurately modelled to experimental results. Regarding damping, both overly dissipative. Differences their potential explanations become apparent analysis flow field data. Meanwhile, large uncertainties especially later oscillations make distinct conclusion difficult. better agreement damping can be achieved, however discrepancies observed when restricting degrees freedom platform. Flow data again reveals differences between codes. through effort use similar settings quantify work represents stepping stone towards fairer more accurate comparison
